Does this sound familiar? You’ve completed a PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) Experience and fallen in love with scuba diving and you are wondering what your next steps should be.
If you know that scuba diving is something you want to continue doing, then your best option is to get certified. Of course, you can continue to take DSD’s on your holidays but if diving is what you love, you’ll be able to do, see, and experience so much more as a certified diver.
PADI Open Water Diver Course
The first level of autonomous scuba diving certification is the PADI Open Water Course. Once completed, you’ll be able to go diving, with a buddy, up to a maximum depth of 18 meters/60 feet. The PADI Open Water certification is recognised around the world and it’s your ticket to a lifetime of scuba diving adventures.
The Open Water Course comprises of 3 core components, knowledge development (theory), confined water dives and open water dives. Depending on how your Discover Scuba Diving course was conducted, it may count toward your open water course.
PADI Discover Scuba Diving to Open Water Diver
If you haven’t taken a Discover Scuba Diving program but are planning to join us for a DSD while you are in Lembongan, let us know if you think that you might go on and get certified later. With knowledge of your plans, we can conduct your DSD in such a way that it will count towards your PADI Open Water Diver course, which can reduce the time, and even the cost, of your Open Water course.
Just like the PADI Open Water Course the Discover Scuba Diving experience also consists of theory, confined water diving (swimming pool) and an open water dive (ocean). If we know that you plan to go on and take the open water course with us, or elsewhere within the next 12 months, we can make a few adjustments to your Discover Scuba Diving experience to ensure that your confined water dive and open water dive count towards your PADI Open Water Course. This means that instead of needing to complete 5 more confined water dives and 4 more ocean dives you’ll just need to make 4 confined water dives and 3 open water dives.
PADI DSD and Open Water Diver Skills
During every Discover Scuba Diving experience, participants need to complete the following skills in confined water:
Inflate and deflate your BCD at the surface
Breathe underwater
Regulator clearing
Regulator recovery
Partial mask clearing
Practice equalization techniques
For your Discover Scuba Diving confined water dive to count to your PADI Open Water Diver course you’ll need to complete these additional skills:
Don your scuba diving equipment (with assistance) and adjust to fit
Complete a pre-dive safety check with a buddy
Breathe from an alternate air source supplied by another diver for at least 30 seconds.
Descend at a controlled rate into water too deep in which to stand
Swim with scuba equipment while maintaining control of both direction and depth.
Locate and read the submersible pressure gauge and signal whether the air supply is adequate or low based on the gauge’s caution zone and/or an assigned supply limit.
Recognize and demonstrate hand signals.
Ascend using proper technique.
Stay within reach of buddy.
Swim facedown at the surface while breathing through a regulator or snorkel
After ascent, keep the mask on and continue breathing from the regulator while using the low pressure inflator to attain positive buoyancy
Deflate the BCD, then orally inflate it until positively buoyant at the surface
This might sound like a lot but our experienced instructors will ensure that it all flows easily and smoothly. You won’t feel pressured or rushed because we move through the skills at a pace dictated by you and your comfort levels.
What is the time Limit for Upgrading a DSD to Open Water?
In short, there is a 12 month time limit for starting your PADI Open Water Diver course after taking your Discover Scuba Diving experience.
If you are intending to take your Open Water Course with a different Instructor, or at a different Dive Center, your World Diving Lembongan Instructor will record that you have completed the additional skills required to offset the first sessions of the Open Water Course (providing you take it within the next 12 months).
We will provide you with an ‘Open Water Course Referral Form’ with the components you have completed signed off by your instructor. All you need to do is keep it safe until you hand it over to your next instructor.
Note: The date of your Discover Scuba Diving experience will be stated on your referral form – be sure to make a note of this. Your confined and open water dives are valid for one year, if you start your open water course more than one year after completing your Discover Scuba Diving experience with us, you will need to take the complete Open Water Course. Similarly, if you have taken a DSD program elsewhere and would like to complete your Open Water Course with us, it must be within a year of your DSD, otherwise we are required to provide you with the complete Open Water Course.
PADI DSD to Open Water Diver: Schedule
Our PADI Open Water Course takes 3-4 days to complete if you have studied online with PADI eLearning. For students who have already completed the PADI Discover Scuba Diving, your course will complete in just 3* days as you’ve already made a start!
Our 3 day schedule ensures that you have enough time to comfortably complete the confined water (swimming pool) sessions and the remaining 3 open water dives. On the final day of your course, your hard work will pay off! You’ll join our divers on a 2 dive morning trip on either our famous BIG Boat, or one of our speedy speedboats. You’ll head over to Nusa Penida and dive Bali’s most vibrant and healthy coral reefs – if conditions are good you might even explore the most famous dive sites of Manta Point and Crystal Bay!
Note: A traditional Balinese rice parcel and fresh fruit is provided during the surface interval on all boats in between dives.
(*Scheduling is flexible to account for sea conditions, tides, and your arrival time on the island on your first day. To be safe, you should allow 3.5 days to complete your program)
